Cape Verde continues to surprise positively on the international front, thanks to an important breakthrough in relations with Italy. During a recent visit to Italy, the Minister of Communities of Cape Verde, Jorge Santos, announced a series of strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening the connection between the two countries. These include the intention to re-open to Italian tourism, with the aim of re-establishing direct flights between Italy and Cape Verde through the national airline TACV.
A new boost for tourism
The resumption of direct air links will not only facilitate Italian tourism to the archipelago, but also represent a breath of fresh air for a key sector of the Cape Verdean economy. Indeed, tourism accounts for around 25% of the country’s GDP and is one of the main sources of employment for the local population. Moreover, the possibility of direct flights will facilitate travel for the large Cape Verdean diaspora living in Italy, strengthening family and cultural ties.
Minister Santos emphasised that this step is a strategic priority for the Cape Verdean government, which is committed to the post-pandemic economic revival. “Reopening the country to Italian tourism means not only promoting the beauty and culture of our archipelago, but also strengthening a historical relationship of friendship between our nations”, he said.
Cooperation agreement with the Piedmont Region
A further sign of the growing cooperation between Italy and Cape Verde was the agreement signed with the Piedmont Region. This partnership, consolidated after more than 15 years of cooperation, aims at the sustainable and socio-economic development of both regions. Key points of the agreement include vocational training initiatives, cultural projects and exchange programmes to promote innovation and social inclusion.
The agreement represents a virtuous example of international cooperation, demonstrating how two geographically distant realities can work together to address common challenges, such as climate change, youth unemployment and the promotion of responsible tourism.
A bridge between two cultures
The revival of relations between Cape Verde and Italy is not only an economic issue, but also a cultural one. The Cape Verdean community in Italy is one of the most numerous in Europe, and this link represents an opportunity to enhance Cape Verdean traditions, music and art on Italian soil.
On the other hand, for Italians, Cape Verde offers a unique mix of breathtaking landscapes, pristine beaches and a hospitable climate all year round, making it an ideal destination for holidays and investments.
Future perspectives
These developments mark a crucial moment for Cape Verde, a country that aims to consolidate its position as a model of sustainable development and positive international relations. The synergy with Italy not only strengthens the archipelago’s visibility, but also opens up new perspectives for the sectors of tourism, culture and economic cooperation.
With initiatives like these, Cape Verde confirms itself as an example of how small countries can have a big impact on the international scene, focusing on innovation, sustainability and inclusion.
